Expert Rigging: Meticulous Planning for Safe Lift Projects

rigging project planning, man welding steel beams

A major rigging project demands meticulous planning and execution. While the actual lift may only span a day or two, it represents the culmination of weeks or even months of intense preparation.

These large-scale projects typically occur over a weekend during daylight hours. Early on, the rigging team must collaborate with the client and stakeholders to select a lift date, allowing ample time for equipment/material delivery and securing necessary permits from local, county, and state authorities. Depending on proximity to airports, FAA permits may be mandated, and many municipalities require notifying local police.

In the planning phase, the firm's crane engineer and riggers conduct site assessments to evaluate project specifics. This information informs crane size, type, reach, positioning, and the quantity, dimensions, and weight of each piece requiring a lift. The rigging plan meticulously accounts for avoiding electrical lines and physical obstacles and maps load travel paths.

Safety is the paramount priority. The rigging crew coordinates extensively with safety/security personnel to barricade work zones, streets, and parking areas, potentially employing police/security for traffic control.

Coordinating crane and load deliveries presents substantial logistical challenges. Many projects involve crane components arriving via multiple flatbed trucks, the assembly of which often requires a second crane's assistance. The arrival of the materials and equipment slated for rigging must be carefully managed, with all loads marked, staged sequentially, and prepped before the lift day.

On lift day, the crane operator and riggers must be on-site early, proceeding only if weather permits – high winds often trigger postponements. With thorough preparation, the project can proceed safely and smoothly.
