Smart Phones and Construction Apps
Construction technology is growing in leaps and bounds. With the advent of smartphones, the cloud, and the plethora of apps available, the construction reference manuals, charts, etc., that were once so indispensible are rapidly becoming dust-covered relics of the past.
About half of adults in the U.S. now own smartphones, and they rely on them for just about everything. There are apps for nearly any topic imaginable, and among them are a myriad of construction industry-related apps that make information that once resided in heavy tomes available at one’s fingertips. Smartphone apps – many of them free – can be readily found and are regularly used in the field.
These include:
· Conversion tables
· Building codes
· Calculators
· Catalogs
· Industry periodicals
· Instructional apps
· Equipment selection
Smartphones can also used in the field to find O&M manuals, local vendors and suppliers, and local subcontractors.
There are still some smartphone holdouts in the construction industry (and, frankly, everywhere else), especially of an older generation, who resist change, are intimidated by advanced technology, or feel they’ve done just fine without them in the past. But smartphones are here to stay, and they give a clear edge to those who use them in the field over those who don’t.
